Gearing up to Machu Picchu

Further to the terrible rainfall and landslides of February (of which we saw many dramatic traces on the roads yesterday) Machu Picchu was closed to visitors for three months and only re-opened last week. This has caused great hardship to all those who live from the tourism generated by what is the most-visited monument in South America and has also led to long waiting lists.

Thanks to Anastassja’s contacts, we have been lucky enough to get a ticket - $280 dollars each including transport – for Saturday next.

Our exploration of the sites of Chinchero, Ollantaytambo and Pisac yesterday limbered up our legs and our minds to what we will see on a bigger scale there: hillside farming terraces, irrigation systems, temples and grain storage facilities. In these pictures, you can see examples of these features in Pisac (top), Ollantaytambo (middle) and Chinchero (bottom)
